Abstract

Secondary retention of permanent molars is an uncommon condition with poorly understood causative factors. Data concerning the mechanism of secondary retention in the permanent molars are insufficient, although a possible role of ankylosis of unknown origin has been suggested. The localization of a genetic/biological defect in the eruption phenotype of secondary retention is largely unknown at present. The intent of this article is to consolidate and organize available information regarding the aetiopathogenesis and to corroborate the current evidence in terms of overall management using three adult case reports exhibiting secondary retention of permanent molars.
